It is getting colder, the nights are drawing in and we are feeling less like we want to go out, do things, go to the gym or eat healthy. We want to hibernate until the spring comes again.
But as humans we cannot actually hibernate. However, in the coldest months of the year, many of us are drawn to something similar. We want to batten down the hatches against the cold wintery weather outside, preserve our energy, lay on a bit of fat and suspend the demands of life, just until the sun comes out again.
It is the time of year when people find it difficult to motivate themselves to do anything. But this is the ideal time to get yourself ready for the warmer months, ahead. And you know it, but still we find it difficult to get moving.
A few years ago I came across a simple technique that is guaranteed to get you moving. It is the 5 second rule by Mel Robbins. Mel Robbins is a self-help author, speaker and she is most well known for her book, The 5 Second Rule.
Mel Robbins explains the rule as,
“The 5 Second Rule is simple. If you have an instinct to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 seconds or your brain will kill it. The moment you feel an instinct or a desire to act on a goal or a commitment, use the Rule. When you feel yourself hesitate before doing something that you know you should do, count 5-4-3-2-1-GO and move towards action.”
Like Mel, I first tried this rule to get myself out of bed on cold mornings. And it works. Of course it does, why wouldn't it? What if you counted down from 5 and got to GO and didn't GO? Well it didn't work, did it! That's not exactly true, because if you took action on GO it would have worked. It isn't the process that doesn't work, in that case, it is you. Yes, YOU! You have to take action. And that is the problem, isn't it? Most people don't want to take action. They have no self discipline. This is what separates those who succeed and those who don't. This is why you see so many people try and fail. Because they have no self discipline. After all this 5-4-3-2-1-GO system is so simple, even a five year old can do it.
If you think it does sound too simple, try it tomorrow morning. And after that apply it to anything else that you can think of. For example, phoning your mum, asking that dream person out for a date or, yes, even going to the gym. Have a thought, count 5-4-3-2-1 and take action.
Now as the new year approaches many of us look forward to a new lease of life. We know what we need to do and should do. And in the new year many of us head for the gym. Then most fall by the way-side after a few weeks. We lose the motivation - NO we lose self-discipline. But now we have something in our toolbox to help us. Use it or lose it, as it is said.
And after using it to get out of bed, getting yourself to the gym, whilst there, stood in front of that heavy weight, count 5-4-3-2-1 and lift the damn weight.
Let us know how you get on with this simple but effective system.
